The USS Constitution Museum

The USS Constitution Museum serves "as the memory and educational voice of the USS Constitution" and is located adjacent to the ship in the Charlestown Navy Yard. The Yard is administered by the National Park Service (NPS) as part of the Boston National Historical Park. The Constitution is an active-duty US Navy vessel.

Increasing access to the ship

The vessel, 225-year old "Old Ironsides," is unique and steeped in history. The museum engaged with Rtangent to create an online visiting experience that would emulate a physical visit to the vessel and would increase access and reduce barriers to experiencing the ship by visitors outside of the Boston area. This increased access also includes hard to reach locations such as the powder magazine below the main decks and the "fighting tops" aloft.

Ship's Boy and Midshipman Tours

Two sites were created for hosting both live and self-guided experiences. These were designed to support (1) elementary school students and (2) middle school students and are accessible as either live (with interpreter) or self-guided tours. Notable are the reuse of the extensive panoramic (virtual space) imagery, access to areas of the ship that are off-limits to live physical tours, and the linkage to many of the digital assets owned by the museum.

Students (right screens) indpendently explore until the instructor (left screen) is ready to refocus and synchronize the group on a particular topic.
