The Lynn Museum/LynnArts
The Lynn Museum serves to collect, preserve and illuminate the City’s history, which includes the rise from an early American settlement to an industrial standout. Notable is its shoe industry once described as "the greatest shoe town in the country" and supported by a diverse mix of nationalities. The Lynn Museum merged with LynnArts and now offers programs spanning history, arts, and culture of Lynn's diverse past and present.
Replicating Existing Educational Unit as a Virtual Experience
We engaged with the Lynn Museum specifically to host a virtual experience to match an existing educational program entitled The History Detectives. This program, typically run as an on-site experience, is based on a workbook with a set of learning units each focusing on a historical element of Lynn's past. Modules include ice harvesting; growing and harvesting flax for creation of textiles; shoemaking, including the invention of the lasting machine; Lydia Pinkham's medicine company, the Lynn Hospital; General Electric (GE); and the invention of Marshmallow Fluff.
Supporting Education and General Audience Access
Using the museum as the backdrop, we captured the current physical experience as panoramic images and then overlaid supporting historical images with additional artifact details. The tour is segmented into units which emulate the outreach experience and can be used live or remotely in conjunction with the existing History Detectives workbook. The museum will use the virtual experience for improving access for general audiences and for supporting virtual field trips and in-school programs.
